Steel Industry’s Economic Recovery and Impact

There have been several articles recently about the worldwide steel supply chain. Below are links to a couple interesting ones that were provided in the latest Alliance for American Manufacturing (AAM) newsletter.

The first is in reference to tariffs on steel.

AAM IN THE NEWS: Report: Steel Tariffs Key for Economic Recovery, Public News Service

“With President Joe Biden considering whether to repeal Section 232, Scott Paul, president of the Alliance for American Manufacturing, said he thinks it would be premature. “The underlying problems the global steel overcapacity – which has been driven over a number of decades by China and other countries – remains unaddressed,” he said. He noted that steel is a critical resource in many sectors, including providing clean water via steel pipes, and energy by way of the wiring in the electrical grid.”

The second article addresses a potential solution for manufacturers in North America.

Canada’s steel industry has a secret weapon that could soon beat China’s cheaper bids, Financial Post

“Under the “Greening Government” directive released by the Treasury Board of Canada earlier this year, the federal government aims to reduce the “embodied carbon” of building materials in major construction projects by 30 per cent, starting in 2025 through the use of recycled and lower carbon materials.”
